Does Your Domain Name matter ?

You bet it does. A domain name should reflect your companies name or product and services.  If you have had a business name in the real world, acquiring a domain name that reflects your companies business name is very important for maintaining consistency and allowing your visitors to find you on the internet.

What is a Domain name?

It is the unique name that identifies an Internet website. Domain names always have two or more parts, separated by dots. The part on the left identifies the site, the part on the right is the extension under which the name is registered, eg: junglezone.co.uk

What do the various extensions mean?

  • .com ... Commercial ...The most common extension for domain names. Often represents companies or for-profit organizations. Most personal Web sites also use this extension.
  • .net ... Generally represents Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
  • .org ...Organization ... Usually represents non-profit organizations or groups.
  • .biz ... Business ... Reserved for use by businesses.
  • .info ... Information ... Made for both businesses and individuals. Usage is unrestricted, but a .info indicates that the Web site primarily is informative.
  • .ws ... Web Site ... An all-around, universally available top-level domain.
  • .co.uk ... Country specific ... in this case the United Kingdom

Choosing your Domain Name

  • Choose one that is easy for your visitors to remember eg: if your business name is East Midlands Exotic Pets, a suitable Domain name might be eastmidlandsexoticpets.com it is usual for a company to name there website after there bricks & mortar store. It is the first thing customers will type into the address bar to try and find you.
  • If you are offering a service, it may be more suitable to register a Domain Name that reflects this eg: if you are offering reptile boarding services, reptileboarding.co.uk might be the better option, easy to remember, descriptive of your service and country specific.
  • Be aware that if you register a domain name that infringes another companies name or trademark, they may take steps to recover it. Likewise, if someone else has registered a name that you think infringes your intellectual property, then there are channels available for you to recover this name.
